FTTP with Less Expense and Greater Ease

The Single Wire Return Device from Scientific Atlanta, a Cisco company, is designed to make it easier and less expensive for broadband operators to deliver Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP) services to their subscribers. By processing QPSK-modulated IP packets and forwarding them onto an Ethernet network, the device eliminates the need for an Ethernet port on the set-top box, and significantly reduces the amount of special Cat 5 cabling required inside the homes of FTTP customers.

Current FTTP architectures require the set-top box to send all upstream communication via Ethernet transport. With the Single Wire Return Device, the set-top box can communicate upstream using a traditional QPSK RF transmission. The device is small and easy to deploy; it's about the same size as a Scientific Atlanta Drop Amp and is designed to operate outside the home at temperatures ranging from -40°C to +60°C. It also complies with Ethernet IEEE 802.3 and TCP/IP standards.
